Alcan acquires flexible packaging facility

Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging (AGPP) - a division of Alcan Packaging, a business unit of Rio Tinto Alcan - has acquired the Chakan flexible packaging plant from Associated Capsules Pvt Ltd in India. With annual sales of $ 3.6 million, the Chakan facility is a distinguished supplier to the Indian pharmaceutical market, with solid manufacturing capabilities and management practices. Located 30-km north of Pune, the 2,600 m2 plant employs approximately 100 people. Its integration into the Alcan Packaging group is expected to be completed by early 2009. Michael Schmitt, president, AGPP Division, said, ''Chakan is a well-equipped plant and has an asset base that will complement our current product portfolio. The expertise with local pharmaceutical companies will be an excellent addition to our organisation, increasing our ability to service global and regional customers while maintaining the high quality standards they expect from us.''

Growth in Chinese imports has slowed for a second consecutive month, adding to signs the nation's appetite for raw materials might not be as extensive as once thought. Imports of goods in September were up 21.3% in dollar terms from a year earlier, China's customs agency said Monday. That compared with a 23.1% gain in August and 33.7% in July. For the months at the beginning of 2008, year-on-year import growth averaged nearly 30%. At the same time the pace of imports is slowing, growth in export shipments remained largely stable. Customs figures showed a 21.5% year-on-year gain in September versus 21.1% in August. That surprised many analysts who had been predicting a sharp impact on China from the global economic slowdown. The surge in commodity prices early this year added substantively to China's import bill, so the recent decline in global commodity prices is likely responsible for some of the slowdown. But the numbers also seems to reflect a cooling of China's domestic economy. Steel production, for example, has slowed sharply and the level of new construction has dropped. "I think there is a falloff in commodity demand," said Ben Simpfendorfer, an economist for Royal Bank of Scotland in Hong Kong. "This is a sign that growth is slowing, but we can't exaggerate the significance of it. Commodity prices are collapsing, so it makes a lot of sense for Chinese commodity buyers to be stepping back at least temporarily," he said. Just as China's boom drove some of the rise in raw-material costs, reassessments of likely Chinese demand during a potential global recession have also contributed to the recent fall in world prices. While China's overall economic growth is generally expected to slow only to near 9% this year, compared with more than 10% in recent years, that could still mean significantly reduced demand for commodities. Those price declines and the weakness in China's imports have had another consequence: the renewed expansion of the nation's already-huge trade surplus. The surplus shrank for the first two quarters of this year, but grew again in the quarter ending Sept. 30, rising 12% to $82 billion. In fact, the surplus for September alone -- $29.3 billion -- was a record high for a single month. And with the economic outlook for China's big markets of the U.S., Europe and Japan all worsening, analysts uniformly expect exports to slow more sharply in coming months. That, in turn, could feed into further weakening of import demand, as much of China's imports are parts and raw materials used to manufacture goods for export. Energy demand, at least, doesn't seem to be collapsing. Partial figures released by Customs suggest China imported about 15 million tons of crude oil in September, which would be in line with recent growth trends. Industry analysts believe Chinese refiners last month may well have taken advantage of lower crude oil prices, which fell about 13% in September from August, to refill their depleted inventories. That likely reflects how the slowdown in China's domestic economy now seems to be concentrated in the real estate sector. That drives demand for metals: copper for appliances and electrical wire, steel for construction. Estimates by Standard Chartered of China's copper demand show it slowing to an average of 3.5% growth this year, compared with 37% in 2007. The China Iron & Steel Association says domestic steel demand in August shrank 6% from a year earlier; media reports say the association is coordinating reductions in output

Efficient absorbent raw material for food packaging

Absorbent pads are already well-known and widely used within the food industry. They are placed between the product and the tray to absorb exudates in order to optimise packaging conditions. Technical Absorbents Ltd (TAL) has developed a highly innovative and efficient absorbent raw material – OASIS Super Absorbent Fibre (OASIS SAF) – that can be incorporated into the fabrics used for production of food pads. The versatility of SAF allows fabric constructions to be designed, which absorb and lock away excess liquid from the food stuff within its core. This helps keep produce fresher for longer. Its non-migratory properties mean that the fabrics can be cut and shaped as required to suit the type of product and the packaging that is being used. Regulated by the US-Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it can be used as a fluid absorbent in food contact materials in the packaging of fruit, vegetables, poultry, meat and fish at refrigerated and frozen temperatures. Dave Hill, business development manager, TAL, said ''OASIS SAF® provides the ability to produce extremely discreet absorbent food packaging materials that exceed industry requirements. It can be processed through all of the key nonwoven manufacturing technologies.''

Nilpeter establishes JV with Proteck Machinery

The label and packaging printing solution provider Nilpeter will manufacture flexo presses in India in a joint venture (JV) project with its current sales and service partner Proteck Machinery. The JV, named Nilpeter India, will manufacture flexo servo presses with a similar specification to the Nilpeter FB-line machine, with auxiliaries such as rotary screen and cold & hot foil stamping. Nilpeter plans to have the first Indian-built press on its stand at the India Label Show in New Delhi this December. Proteck is a manufacturing and distribution company headquartered in Chennai. Apart from offering sales and technical support services for Nilpeter in India, the company acts as an agent and parts manufacturer for a number of other presses and equipment manufacturers, including Mitsubishi. The Indian-built presses are targeted for sale to Indian label converters, but in the longer term, Nilpeter will consider exporting to other Asian markets also. The company is said to be building the Indian manufacturing operation on the example of Nilpeter's Brazilian manufacturing JV taking the best experience in the operational and management structures from the latter plant.

China Jan-Aug industrial profits up 19.4 pct yr/yr

BEIJING, Sept 26 - Chinese industrial firms earned a combined 1.8685 trillion yuan ($273.9 billion) in profits in January through August, up 19.4 percent from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday. The figure marked a dip from annual growth of 20.9 percent in the first five months of the year. Profits grew 36.7 percent from a year earlier in the first 11 months of 2007. The agency did not give a full-year figure for last year. Some analysts are sceptical of the data, saying the results are driven by big monopolies that benefit from state protection. But others say the figures give a rough guide to profitability trends. Profits grew 31 percent in 2006, around 23 percent in 2005 and 40 percent in 2004. ($1=6.819 Yuan)
